Stem cell therapy is a type of regenerative medicine that uses stem cells to heal the body. With stem cell therapy, medical professionals can harness and magnify the body’s healing potential to repair the damage and possibly even avoid surgical intervention for the suffering caused by the aging process or an injury.
NJ Spine & Orthopedic offers the latest research, treatments, and technology for pain relief. We are dedicated to achieving the best possible results for each patient with the least invasive approach possible. We use state-of-the-art equipment and treatments to promote faster recovery times, allowing our patients to return to normal activities much sooner. Stem cells are like the “blank slates” of cells. Unlike other cells that specialize in certain areas, like skin or muscle cells, stem cells have the ability to become other types of cells. This ability to become other cells makes them indispensable in treating many chronic medical conditions. The term pluripotent stem cells are often used to describe the ability to differentiate (change) into other types of cells.
Early stem cell studies relied on donated embryos to extract embryonic stem cells. Today, doctors and scientists can extract those cells from many other tissues, including fat tissue and bone marrow. During stem cell therapy, these cells are extracted from the patient’s body, purified, and then reinjected into the patient’s body. Once the cells are in the patient’s bloodstream, they travel to damaged areas, becoming the new tissue the body needs to repair and heal itself.
Stem cells are the foundation of organs and tissue in the human body. Many types of stem cells originate from different places in the body and are formed at various times in a person’s life. These various stem cells include embryonic stem cells that exist only at the earliest stages of development and various tissue-specific (or adult) stem cells that appear during fetal development and remain in the body throughout a lifetime.
All stem cells can make copies of themselves (self-renew) and differentiate (develop into more specialized cells). Beyond these two critical abilities, stem cells vary widely in what they can and cannot do and the circumstance under which they can and cannot do these certain functions.

Stem cell therapy is incredibly helpful in managing long-term, chronic conditions. While stem cell therapy can be used on its own as a treatment, it’s often used in combination with other therapists for optimal results. Below are eight conditions where stem cell therapy can prove to be beneficial.
Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that affects the joints. Stem cell therapy helps by repairing damaged joint cartilage and reducing inflammation in and around the joints.
Stem cell transplants can be used to treat lymphoma and leukemia by replacing cells that the disease has damaged.
Stem cell therapy can be used to repair nerve damage resulting from Parkinson’s disease and may help replace dopamine-producing brain cells destroyed by the disease.
Cardiac regeneration through stem cell therapy helps patients who’ve had heart attacks, experienced heart failure, and even patients with large and small vessel disease. In every case, the treatment goal is to allow the stem cells to repair and replace damaged tissue in the heart and blood vessels.
Stem cells can be used to repair neurological damage that occurs in multiple sclerosis. Studies have found that stem cells can travel directly to brain lesions and improve brain cell health. Stem cells can also help control unusual immune system activity.
Stem cells can help replace damaged or missing beta cells, which are specialized cells in the pancreas producing insulin. Both type one and type two diabetes involve problems with beta cells (either not enough beta cells or cells that are not functioning properly). Stem cell therapy can help patients with either type of diabetes.
Stem cells can help modulate inflammatory responses, including inflammation associated with fibromyalgia. These stem cells can help repair and regenerate damaged nerve cells that can “misfire,” sending pain signals when there is no painful stimulus.
Stem cells can transform into other cells, including kidney tissue, so they’re being used to treat acute and chronic kidney injuries and kidney disease. The goal of stem cells is to replace damaged cells and cells lost due to tissue damage.
This is not an exhaustive list of conditions that stem cell therapy can treat. Stem cell therapy plays a leading role in regenerative medicine, a subspeciality of medicine that focuses on helping the body heal itself naturally, which is constantly improving.
