Experts Emphasize Immediate Care and Stabilization for Spinal Cord Injury Management

Authorities are urging for timely and effective response to spinal cord injuries sustained during road accidents, which are a major cause of long-term disability in India. Neurosurgeons emphasize the critical need for rapid action and appropriate medical stabilization techniques to improve patient rehabilitation prospects and functional recovery.

Highlighting the importance of prompt medical intervention, Dr. Manish Vaish, Senior Director of Neurosurgery at the Max Super Speciality Hospital in Vaishali, stated that immediate care for spinal injuries lays the essential foundation for further medical treatment. Comprehensive treatment protocols, such as immobilisation and surgical procedures, are essential to prevent conditions from deteriorating and to enhance the chances of patient recovery.

Spinal injuries often result from vehicle collisions, falls, or other traumatic events and can have life-altering consequences if not addressed swiftly. Dr. Yashpal Singh Bundela, a Senior Consultant at Sushrut Brain and Spine in Delhi, stressed that every moment delayed can lead to increased neurological damage. Bundela underlined that the main objective is to stabilize the spine and decrease pressure on the spinal cord as quickly as possible, which may require surgical intervention to alleviate compressing forces.

The transition to rehabilitation becomes a key focus once the critical initial treatment phase is concluded. Healthcare professionals, including physical and occupational therapists, collaborate closely to help patients rebuild strength, retrain muscles, and optimize functionality for the long term.
