Lifeguard sustains spinal injuries while rescuing child from drowning in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. — A serious car accident occurred in Raleigh, resulting in significant injuries to a 19-year-old lifeguard who was hospitalized for over two weeks following the incident. The young man, identified as Youssef Bounagui, suffered spinal injuries while attempting to perform a rescue, underscoring the risks associated with both emergency responses and vehicle accidents.

The incident transpired when Bounagui was involved in a perilous situation, reportedly caused by a driver’s reckless behavior. Details surrounding the accident are still under investigation, but initial reports suggest that the lifeguard jumped into water to save a child in distress before being injured. Due to his current condition, he is unable to provide a complete account of the events leading to his injuries.

Bounagui remains in WakeMed hospital where medical staff are closely monitoring his recovery. His injuries include damage to the spine, and although he is showing signs of improvement, the road to recovery appears long and challenging. He expressed that it is disheartening for him not to have the ability to move freely, especially in a situation where he is determined to overcome the limitations his injuries have imposed.
