Skydive Accident Leaves Thrill Seeker Paralyzed and Facing Life-Changing Injuries

A skydiving accident in Peterlee has left a 31-year-old man partially paralyzed after he fell during a landing attempt. Kirk Trainor, a resident of Acklam and an experienced skydiver with approximately 700 jumps to his name, sustained severe injuries, including eight broken ribs and a critical spinal cord injury.

The accident occurred at Sky-High Skydiving when Trainor encountered difficulties while attempting to land. He reported that as he was coming in for a landing, he lost control of a toggle, which is essential for managing the parachute’s descent. With negligible time to react, Trainor impacted the ground, resulting in a compression fracture of the T12 vertebra in his spine.

Emergency medical staff administered surgery to stabilize Trainor’s spine using rods and screws. Despite this intervention, he faces a long and challenging road to recovery, with hopes of regaining the ability to walk one day. A significant aspect of his recovery process now hinges on a stem cell treatment program, which carries substantial financial implications.

Due to the severity of his injury, Trainor is currently unable to resume his position as a project manager in the chemical and oil industries. While he can participate in meetings via video calls, he is unable to work full time or attend the office until he adapts to his new mobility challenges.
