Teen Paralyzed in Diving Accident Shows Progress in Recovery Journey

On June 20, a tragic incident occurred when 13-year-old Semyon Williams Jr. (SJ) experienced a spine-breaking injury after diving into a pool. The accident took place in Frisco as SJ tried to evade a wasp, resulting in him being paralyzed.

SJ’s mother, Anya Camper, recounted the harrowing moments when her son did not resurface after his dive. Although he remained conscious, he feared for his life, thinking he might drown. Anya described SJ as a socially active youth who enjoyed football, swimming, and spending time with his siblings. She expressed her pain in seeing her young son confined to a hospital bed, unable to partake in the activities he loves.

After the incident, SJ underwent surgery at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas to mend the fractures in his neck. The road to recovery is expected to be long, requiring extensive rehabilitation. His grandfather, Louis Camper, shared that SJ is showing minor yet promising signs of recovery, such as slight finger movement, bringing a glimmer of hope to the family during this difficult time.

The family has been dealing with the emotional and financial strain of the accident. Anya’s wish is to raise awareness among other families about the dangers near water to prevent similar incidents. A fundraising campaign has been established to support SJ’s journey to recovery and assist with the unforeseen medical expenses faced by the family.
